APA Workshop on Tuesday, October 14

Come learn more about APA style for your papers and publications!
What is APA style? A Pretty Amazing style?  Not quite. In its Publication Manual, the American Psychological Association (APA) provides guidelines to authors for writing and formatting research publications.

In collaboration with HESA, Higher Education in Review (HER) is co-sponsoring an APA Workshop on Tuesday, October 14, from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in 403 Rackley. Beyond addressing important elements of APA style (i.e., selection of headings, punctuations, citations, etc.), participants will have an opportunity to critique a manuscript with member of the HER Editorial Board.

This workshop will immediately follow the monthly HESA meeting.  We hope to see you at both events.

Sandmeyer Shares Insights About Spellings Commission

Louise Sandmeyer, Executive Director of the Office of Planning and Institutional Assessment at Penn State

At a Thursday, October 2 HESA brown bag, Ms. Sandmeyer engaged the group in a dynamic conversation about the real impact of the Spellings Commission – an impact that all agreed was as much on discourse as it was on policy and practice. Much of the discussion focused on how issues of personality and style overwhelmed the Commission’s work and subsequent efforts to implement an action plan. Pointed questions were raised about the Commission’s non-engagement of the higher education community, misguided approaches to advancing assessment and accountability objectives, and the role that for-profit higher education has played in shaping the political and policy agenda. All agreed that, as is detailed in Ms. Sandmeyer’s report, the Commission created a commotion. The question remained as to whether this may have been an effective way, in the end, to get members of the higher education community talking and working together to resolve challenges with which colleges and universities have been struggling for decades.

Announcement: Upcoming brown bag discussion

Dr. G. Alan Stull will be in for an informal and lively discussion

Dr. G. Alan Stull will be in for an informal and lively discussion

On Thursday, October 9, at 12:15 pm in 221 Chambers, HESA will be sponsoring its next brown bag discussion, with special guest Dr. G. Alan Stull.

Dr. Stull’s wealth of experience as a university administrator brings him to HESA for what promises to be an engaging and lively informal discussion on the trials and tribulations of a university administrator, accreditation in higher education, and other issues.

Dr. Stull is in Happy Valley for just a few days to be honored as the 2008 recipient of the College of Health and Human Development’s Alumni Recognition Award.  He has had a very long administrative career in higher education, and has served as the dean or director of schools at SUNY-Buffalo, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Minnesota.

HESA is excited to host this upcoming brown bag discussion with Dr. Stull, and we hope you will mark your calendars to attend!
