Upcoming brown bag with Dr. Griffin!

The Higher Education Students Association (HESA) is holding a brown bag lunch with Dr. Kimberly A. Griffin, Assistant Professor of Education in the College Student Affairs and Higher Education Program and Research Associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education,

Wednesday, March 4th, 12:00 pm

403 Rackley Building.

Dr. Griffin will discuss her strategies for approaching all the steps in the dissertation process, based on participants’ questions.  This brown bag with Dr. Griffin will be a casual discussion with all of you who are thinking of, in the middle of, or near completing your dissertation.  Along with lit review preparation, proposal defense, and dissertation fellowships, time and stress management will be discussed.  Please bring any concerns or suggestions about the dissertation process to this HESA brown bag. Announcing HER’s next Editor

HEROn behalf of the editorial board and selection committee for Higher Education in Review, we are pleased to announce that Nathan (Nate) M. Sorber has been named Editor-Elect for Volume 7 of Higher Education in Review. Currently a second-year PhD candidate in the Higher Education Program at the Pennsylvania State University, Nate’s term as Editor will begin May 1, 2009. His selection as Editor follows two years of service to the journal, most recently as Associate Editor for Volume 6.  We are confident in his leadership and thank him for his ongoing commitment to Higher Education in Review. Congratulations, Nate!

Additions to our PSU HIED community

We are very excited to share the news of two additions to the faculty at Penn State. Dr. John Cheslock will be joining our community this fall as an Associate Professor in the Higher Education Program and a Senior Research Associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education. Dr. Liang Zhang has accepted an appointment to serve as an Assistant Professor in Ed Theory and Policy and a Research Associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education.

Dr. John J. CheslockDr. John J. Cheslock obtained his Ph.D. in Labor Economics from Cornell University in 2001. While at Cornell, he also served as a research assistant at the Cornell Higher Education Research Institute (CHERI). His research focuses on the economics of higher education with a special interest in tuition and financial aid policy, faculty labor markets, the role of Title IX in intercollegiate athletics, and revenue stratification across institutions.Dr. Liang Zhang

Dr. Liang Zhang received a Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Arizona and a Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University. Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on economics and finance of higher education, particularly on the role of governments and institutions in affecting institutional performances and student outcomes. His recent studies include the return of college education and quality, and public funding and institutional performances.

Unleash your talent to pubish

Please join us on Thursday, Feb 5th in Rackley 403, 12-1 PM, for an informal brownbag presentation on getting academic work published.  This lunchtime discussion is specifically geared towards graduate students who are seriously considering preparing original work for publication, but who may have little or no experience in academic publishing.  We will have a brief panel discussion followed by open-ended Q&A.  The panelists will include:
