HESA Volleyball Games

Hi everyone-

We had overwhelming interest in volleyball, so we have TWO teams! YAY! It
worked out great, actually, because it made it so that everyone who
expressed interest was able to play, no one was excluded due to lack of
availability. Also I know some people are excited and want to play a lot,
and others would prefer not to have the pressure….so hopefully this will
balance us all out!

The teams are divided in part based on availability, and in part on trying
to put together people who knew each other (since I thought that would
reduce awkwardness and increase actually showing up).  This kind of ended up
looking like master’s students vs. doctoral students — but that wasn’t my
intention! I was also trying to balance by gender, since the teams have to
have a balance during play.

There are roughly 13 people on the roster for each team. Some of you may
have not confirmed your interest, or weren’t sure if you could make it on a
regular basis, but I included you anyway so you could show up to one of the
teams. If any of you would like to switch between the teams, you need to let
me know before the start of play next week (you can only compete on one
team).

If you did not sign up and are not on a roster, but still want to play,
that’s okay! Just show up!  You can be added to the roster on game day (but
again, can only play with one team).

Tuesday’s team may have more experience, but I’m confident that Wednesday’s
team will be exquisite at trash talking. :)

Please be sure to review the rules for IM Volleyball (found here:
http://www.athletics.psu.edu/recsports/rules/vbrules.pdf ) prior to your
first game.

Without further ado, our teams are:

TUESDAYS (First game 1/24, 6:30pm, Gym 2 IM Building)
Heller Campfire Rejects (a combination of names submitted)
Captain/Manager: Duane Rohrbacher

WEDNESDAYS (First game 1/18, 6:30pm, Gym 2 IM Building)
All Balled Up
Captain/Manager: Jess Bennett

YAY! Let’s Bump, Set, Spike, and Serve our way into a fantastic spring
semester.

Graduate Student Research Symposium

Friday, March 30, 2012

102 Kern Building (Faculty Senate)

Graduate students are invited to submit proposals that focus on current issues in education by applying new analyses, theories, or methods that suggest a new research direction designed to address the limitations of existing education scholarship.

aSubmissions may consist of a discussion of theory or methods but could also use an education related case study to explicate the question at issue. All submissions should accomplish at least one of the following: (1) a discussion of current thought in the study of education and its subfield(s), (2) a description of a problem or gap in this thought, and/or (3) explication of a new approach that might address this issue.

The symposium is an opportunity for students to present recently completed and “in-progress” work to an audience of peers – graduate students, faculty members, and alumni. In order to be considered please submit a 500-word abstract to sch5169@psu.edu as a Word-compatible (e.g., .doc, .rtf) attachment by Friday, March 3, 2012. Please contact Sarah Hoffman (sch5169@psu.edu) or Emil Cunningham (emil@psu.edu) with questions.
